Nothing is as empowering as Martin Luther King’s ‘I have a dream‘ speech, and every January 18th, we are reminded of this man’s words and legacy.
Except that it only matters where it matters; American media.
If you are reading this blog for the first time, I welcome you to one of my many candid talks about living, studying, and working in Corporate America.
As if the headline of this blog isn’t shocking enough–who wants to slow down, I welcome you to one of the my most shocking realizations of this year…
We don’t care about fairness.
We don’t care about equality.
We don’t care about others’ freedom of expression and will.
And we certainly don’t care about leading with heart.
We only care when it matters; when taking up such cause makes us look good…
When it shines a light on our “struggles” to cut through bureaucracy in organizations. When it means that the graph on that income report will show green lines.
Before this post there was Jada and Will Smith’s call for the Oscars boycott aka #Oscarssowhite. There was that lady who advocated the demise of of BET and Black History Month. There definitely were heated internet responses––my favorite is #whoisstacydash.
Trust me, I don’t do American politics or social media. Really! My nose is all up in Korean news, scandals, and the behinds of my favorite Chinese actors.
But these developments in the last few weeks have shaped the way I approach leadership and being a team member in Corporate America.
Recently, a colleague of mine asked an interesting question on why humility is disregarded from leadership trainings and textbooks. I know he meant servant leadership; the professor did too.
But who cares? Go outside and walk into the closest bookstore. Pick 5 leadership books closest to you and skim the contents. I can bet that majority of the attributes that they promote have nothing to do with humility.
If they talk about humility, it sounds a whole lot like likability. Like having an “open door” policy at work. Like giving compliments when they are deserved.
My point is….I am slowing down and enjoying the growth process, guys.
As a daughter, a sister, a group leader, and a biz lady. Growth isn’t some North Korean rocket. Sometimes you gotta sit and fan the flames…and realize that things aren’t what they seem on the surface. Still waters run deep!
This is my second post this year and it isn’t supposed to sound negative so imma stop.
And if you’re wondering why this post sounds like a rant, read my previous blog post. As I type this, I have over 100 pages of academic papers waiting to be written––I really don’t have time for “how tos.” I can shamelessly promote my services, however.
